Silchester – Life on the Dig

In the summer of 2014 I spent nine weeks as Artist in Residence recording the last year of the Silchester (Calleva Atrebatum) excavations, at the invitation of Professor Mike Fulford (Department of Archaeology, University of Reading).

The idea was to try to capture the excitement of working on a dig
as a student or volunteer, the work and the play, and the thrill of occasionally finding something special, Iron Age or Roman.

In the book Silchester-Life on the Dig by Jenny Halstead and Michael Fulford (published by Two Rivers Press in October 2015)
I have aimed to show in sketches and paintings, the three phases starting with the setting up of the site, the process of an excavation (the day-to-day work of trowelling, sieving, measuring, recording, and communicating this to visitors of all ages) and finally the departure from the site and back-fill of hundreds of tonnes of soil.

The exhibition of my work and the launch of the book took place
at the Old Fire Station Gallery in Henley-on-Thames in late
October 2015.
